Turkish Salep (Sahlep)

Turkish salep, also written sahlep, is a thick, warming milk drink closely associated with winter in Türkiye. Its traditional character comes from salep powder made from orchid tubers, while modern retail products can range from pure salep to convenient drink mixes. GUIDE & TRADITION

What is Turkish salep?

Salep has a long place in Ottoman and Turkish food culture and is still strongly associated with cold-weather drinking. Traditional preparation combines salep with milk and sugar and cooks it gently until the liquid becomes smooth and lightly thickened. Cinnamon is the most familiar finishing spice. Salep is also associated with the characteristic texture of traditional Maraş-style ice cream, although drink powders and ice-cream ingredients should not be assumed to have the same formulation. For another traditional hot drink, compare Turkish Coffee.

Pure salep and instant salep mixes

This distinction matters when shopping online. A pure salep powder can be used in small amounts and requires its own recipe, while ready-to-prepare mixes may already contain sugar, starches, milk ingredients or flavourings. Read the ingredient list and preparation directions rather than choosing by the word “salep” alone. Single-serve formats can be convenient; larger packs make more sense when you prepare the drink regularly. For the broader tea tradition, see Turkish Tea.

How to prepare and serve salep

Follow the package directions because concentration varies. In general, the powder is blended gradually into milk and heated while stirring until the desired consistency develops. Serve it hot, traditionally with ground cinnamon. For international orders, dry salep powders are generally more practical to ship than prepared liquid drinks. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Turkish salep made from?

Traditional salep is associated with powder produced from orchid tubers and prepared with milk and sugar. Commercial drink mixes may contain additional ingredients, so always check the label.

How do you make Turkish salep?

Salep powder is mixed into milk and heated while stirring until smooth and lightly thickened. The exact amount depends on whether the product is pure salep or a prepared mix.

Why is cinnamon served with salep?

Ground cinnamon is the classic finishing spice for a hot cup of salep and complements its mild, creamy flavour.

Is sahlep the same as salep?

Yes. Sahlep is a common alternative spelling of salep. Product formulas can still differ, so the ingredient list is more important than the spelling.
