Turkish Milled Flax Seed – Arifoğlu
The Latin name Linum usitatissimum, meaning “a very medicinal plant,” refers to flax, which belongs to the Linaceae family. Its native lands are Turkey, Egypt, Syria, and Iraq. Today, it is also cultivated as a crop in Europe, Asia, and both North and South America. During the months of June and August, it brightens the summer season with its silky-soft, freedom-inspiring bright blue or distinctive yellow flowers. Flax is classified into two types: fiber flax and oil flax, and it can be easily grown in almost any type of soil. In Anatolia, flax is planted seasonally as both spring and autumn varieties.
Numerous archaeological studies indicate that flax farming took place in Mesopotamia around 7,000 years ago. In ancient Egypt, images depicting the cultivation of flax were found in tombs, where flax was also placed as food offerings.
Ground flaxseed is commonly added to mixed grain breads in the bakery industry in the West. It is widely used to create unique flavors in cakes, pies, and all types of dough mixtures. It can also be used as a seasoning in salads, soups, rice dishes, and other meals.
